Judo is a martial art form for women and men, founded in 1882 in Japan by Jigoro Kano, as a modern extension of an ancient Japanese martial art. Competitors are classified into weight categories, compete dressed in a kimono or judogi, barefoot and carrying a belt in the colour which indicates affiliation to a particular group. The aim of the fight, which is carried out on a square-shaped mat, is to throw the opponent on his back or his side, while using approved interventions.
The benefits of judo have been recognised in the field of child and youth development, which is why this sport has been introduced into the school program in some countries. It enables proper psychophysical development due to its influence on a whole range of traits and abilities. Judo is special because anyone can do it – girls and boys, older people, top athletes and amateur athletes, independent of their abilities and physical constitution.
